This week: "The Good Ol' Boys' Club" 7-8-98
This Rant will probably make a LOT of people mad, and you can flame
me if you want, but first THINK about what I am saying before you
flame! Because I think this is a VERY important thing to notice if we
are all going to be better people to each other.
I was out looking for GOOD pages the other day, and I decided that
a high-quality site would link to OTHER high-quality pages! And that
was a pretty good strategy at first! But then I started noticing
something. On each of the Links pages, the SAME sites kept being named
over and over and OVER again! Not to say that the sites that were
named weren't good pages, because they ARE! But they are the ones that
EVERYBODY knows about already. If you don't believe me, take a look
around! You can see the repetition pretty fast.
So why do these pages ALWAYS get named? My guess is because these
people are all FRIENDS, and that is a nice thing! But there are
OTHER good pages out there with unique things to offer that get
passed by because they don't belong to the big circle of Net friends.
Places like High
Voltage and Mamoru
Guide that have unique and detailed information, or
Rose's Chibi-Usa Shrine
with its BEAUTIFUL graphics! Even a true CLASSIC like
The Original Sailor
Mars Shrine doesn't get all the attention that these other sites
do! It is almost as though we are dividing ourselves by our pages
instead of by the NORMAL things like common interests and personality,
and that feels kind of WRONG to me.
This kind of thing happens EVERYWHERE. Most women know about the
"Good Ol' Boys' Club" that they say keeps the woman down and then men
in power, right? And not just there! Even in SCHOOL, there are the
people who are in the popular pretty girls clique, or the popular
handsome jocks clique, and a LOT of times their purpose is to keep
everyone else OUT. Could the same thing be happening in the world
of Sailor Net? Here are some characteristics that I see in this
Good Ol' Boys' Club that is forming among Sailormoon page owners:
- They all have pretty good pages!
- A lot of them have ICQ. They all talk to each other THERE because
it is faster than E-mail, and they decide they like each other. But
it is still THEIR CHOICE about who they talk to and who they don't!
- They ALWAYS credit each other on credits pages, sometimes for no
real REASON at all!
- Did I mention the CONSTANT links?
- They help each other out, but usually not anyone ELSE.
Maybe I am seeing ghosts where there aren't any, but it feels to
ME that a LOT of people with good pages are being WAY too exclusive.
A good page may NEVER get discovered if they don't work into this
elitist group! And that DOES make the GOOD pages BETTER, but the
other pages may have NO chance by themselves! So here is what I am
saying to ALL people with good pages: GET OFF THAT PEDESTAL!! Talk to
some people, HELP them out! It is nice to know that your page is good,
and you don't have to LIKE the people with worse pages, but there are
some VERY creative people waiting for THEIR turn to take center stage!
Don't stifle them while you are helping yourself!
